Information for patients

It’s not always easy to talk about symptoms like vaginal pressure, bulging or a heavy feeling in your pelvis. These symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse are quite common, especially after childbirth or menopause, and can affect quality of life.

What is pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) happens when the muscles and tissues that normally hold your pelvic organs in place — like the bladder, uterus, or bowel — become stretched or weakened.

This can cause one or more organs to press against or drop into the vaginal wall, leading to symptoms like:

A feeling of heaviness
A noticeable bulge
Difficulty with bowel,
bladder, and sexual function

Treatment depends on how much the prolapse affects your daily life. For some women, pelvic floor exercises or pessaries can help. In other cases, surgery may be recommended to provide longer-term support and improve comfort.

Why treatment choices can feel limited

In the past, many prolapse surgeries used synthetic mesh to support the body’s tissues. Mesh-based repair has now been withdrawn or restricted in many countries due to its high complication rate.

Native tissue repair is currently the alternative surgical option. It uses your own tissue for repair, but it does not always prove strong enough. Sometimes the prolapse happens again.

Once you’ve had surgery, recovery can take 6-12 weeks. That’s just not practical for many women, particularly those with small children. Even with support, it can feel almost impossible to prioritise rest when your family and your employer still need you.

A new approach using your own biology

SmartFem offers something different – an approach that works with your body to promote both tissue augmentation and healing. It has been used in 400+ procedures to date with no reported adverse events.

Our Victoria Graft System (VGS) is a single-use surgical kit that allows your clinician to create a soft tissue graft during your prolapse repair surgery using a small amount of your own blood.

That graft acts as temporary biological and mechanical support while your body heals and strengthens after your surgery. There are no synthetic materials and no animal products involved – just your own body aiding its recovery.
